Changelog & What's New¶

This page shows what has changed in the Techlogia learning platform (Lab) — new features, improvements and bug fixes. The latest version is at the top, so you can always see what changed for you, your class or your school.

Current version: v2.16.1

We use a running version number following the Major.Feature.Fix scheme (e.g. v2.1.0). The Techlogia app (iOS/Android) has its own version number, which you can find in the app store or in the app under Settings → About.

Changes to the Techlogia app itself are listed under App changelog.

v2.16.1 — 23 October 2026¶

Scrolling in a lesson: Scrolling past the end of the tasks or the sidebar sometimes pushed the whole lesson out of view, leaving a blank white area. Tasks and terminal now scroll only within their own column, and the workspace reaches the bottom edge of the window (previously a white strip remained there).

One sentence for every course: Under each course name you now see, in one sentence, what you can do afterwards — in the course catalog, the learning paths, on the Lab start page and in the course overview. One VM per person: If you click start several times because it is taking a while, you now get the same VM back. Before, every click started its own VM and cost you play time. If you start a VM for a different lesson, the previous one is ended. Anything you saved in ~/ablage is kept.

Leaderboard: When signed in, the page showed "Something went wrong" instead of the leaderboard. It loads again now, including your league.

Signing in with Google, GitHub or Apple keeps your language: If you use the Lab in English, you used to land on the German version after signing in. Now you continue in the language you signed in with – and our emails to you use that language too.

VS Code is now the editor in the Lab: Next to the lesson there are now just "Terminal" and "Editor (VS Code)". You no longer need the separate "Files" tab – the editor shows and edits all files on your practice VM. Whatever is in ~/ablage is still kept for your next start; the note about it now sits at the top of the editor.
Fallback if the editor does not start: If VS Code cannot be set up on your practice VM, one click opens the simple file editor.

Terms of use updated: The Lab terms now describe practice time in minutes and that a session without an open terminal ends after 15 minutes. Before your next start, we will ask you to accept the new version.

Practice time instead of starts: You now get 180 minutes of practice time every day instead of three starts. Only the time your practice VM is running counts, so a quick look no longer costs a whole start.
"+15 min": Shortly before the end you can extend your session, as long as practice time is left.
Bonus for finishing: The first complete finish of a module earns a one-time 15 bonus minutes.
Automatic checks: The tick appears by itself as soon as you've solved a task. An automatic failed attempt doesn't count. You can turn it off under "Check automatically".
Click-to-run commands: In some lessons, "Run in terminal" sends a setup command straight to the terminal.
Multiple terminals: Up to three terminals side by side, e.g. logs on the left, commands on the right.
Your storage: Whatever you keep in ~/ablage is back on your next start (up to 5 MB).
Daily challenges: Learning paths where a new step unlocks every day.
Weekly leagues: If you take part in the leaderboard, you play for promotion in a group every week.
Solve rate: Each task shows how many learners have solved it.
Flag tasks: A new task type where you find a flag hidden on the VM.
Editor in the browser: Next to terminal and files there is now an "Editor (VS Code)" tab – a full code editor right on your practice VM.
For teachers: A suggested grade per class with an adjustable scheme and CSV export.

Invite friends: The invite page now shows right away how many extra starts you and your friend get. Share your link directly via WhatsApp, Telegram or email, on your computer too.

Signed-in devices on the web: Under Settings → Signed-in devices you can see which devices your account is signed in on and when each was last active. Sign out a device you don't recognize with one click, or all other devices at once. Until now this was only possible in the app.
Choose your names: Under Settings → Names you can change your display name for the leaderboard and, separately, set the name on certificates. Your certificates can show your real name while you use a nickname on the leaderboard. Earlier certificates that still showed your username get the new name.

The public verification page of a learning path certificate now shows the surname shortened, as module certificates already do.

Fixed

The “Open” link in a security notification in the bell led to “Page not found” on the web. It now opens the device overview.
Security notifications in the bell are labelled “Security” instead of “Announcement”.

Several files at once: In the “Files” tab every file opens as its own tab above the editor, just like in VS Code. Switch between files with one click; unsaved changes, cursor and undo history stay with each tab. Close a tab with ✕. If you have not saved yet, the editor asks first.
Collapse the file tree: Use the button left of the tabs or Ctrl + B (Mac: Cmd + B) to give the editor the full width.

The “Files” tab is now dark like the terminal, so switching between the two no longer jumps from light to dark.
Fits narrow windows too, e.g. on Chromebooks or when you widen the task column: the file tree then slides over the editor instead of squeezing it.
You name new files and folders right in the file tree instead of a browser pop-up.

“Files” tab in the practice environment: Next to the terminal there is now a second tab. It shows the folders and files of your practice VM, opens files in an editor with syntax highlighting (e.g. HTML, CSS, Python, shell scripts and nginx configuration) and saves changes directly on the VM – with the Save button or Ctrl + S (Mac: Cmd + S). You can create new files and folders with one click.
Terminal and editor work together: What you save in the editor can be used in the terminal right away, and vice versa. If a file was changed in the terminal in the meantime, the editor asks instead of overwriting it.
System files stay part of the exercise: You can view files such as /etc/issue in the editor. Changing them still happens in the terminal with sudo, because handling permissions is part of what you learn.

Translated pages: If you let your browser translate the Lab (for example with Chrome's or Edge's translate feature), starting an exercise could end on an error page. That no longer happens.
Reloading while starting: If you reload a lesson while your exercise environment is still starting, the page now appears right away without an extra rebuild.

Invite friends: Under Invite friends you'll find your personal link and code. If someone signs up with it, confirms their e-mail address and passes their first task, you both get 2 extra starts. For the 3rd and 10th friend you get another 3 or 5 starts.
Extra starts are only used once your starts for today are used up. They expire after 90 days. You can see how many you have left in the catalog and on the invite page.
Already signed up without using the link? You can add your friend's code under Settings within the first 14 days.
Free learners aged 16 and over can take part; class and school accounts don't. All rules are in the program terms.
After your first completed module we ask whether you'd like to review the Lab on Google — at most twice, and "Later" or "No thanks" ends it anytime. There is deliberately nothing in return for a review.

Quiz questions with several correct answers: the wrong options are now worded just as thoroughly as the right ones. You can no longer spot the correct answers because they are the longest – only by knowing them.

The confirmation link after signing up is valid for 24 hours – as stated in the privacy policy. Expired? Just sign up again with the same address and you'll get a new link.

If a lab VM can't be started right now, you immediately see a message instead of the start hanging for minutes. The attempt doesn't count against your daily quota.
A brief server outage (e.g. during an update) no longer signs you out. You stay signed in and can keep working.
If an unexpected error occurs in the lab, you see a clear error page with "Try again" instead of a blank page.

In settings, students now see their login name instead of an "email address" field.
Learning paths on the schools page use the same levels as the courses (beginner, intermediate, advanced) and count the modules correctly.
The school directory has pagination – all schools are reachable, not just the first 50.

My progress reordered: your next step is at the very top with a "Continue" button, the numbers sit in a calm strip. A success rate only appears once you have checked something. Achievements are a list, unlocked ones first.
Settings at a glance: everything in one block, "Delete account" clearly separated at the end.
Sign in and sign up in the same style as the rest of the Lab, with a blue main button; passkey comes before email sign-in.
Leaderboard: the table is at the top, your rank is highlighted, and you can join right there.
Shorter Lab home page: eight sections instead of fourteen, the modules appear once as a clear list.
Courses by topic: first steps, securing servers, web servers & containers, attack & defence, coding & data – beginner courses first. Levels are named the same everywhere: beginner, intermediate, advanced.
"Starts" everywhere, including the home page and help.

v2.10.7 — October 9, 2026¶

Consistent terms. The machine is called "practice VM" everywhere, and your daily allowance counts "starts" – instead of four different words for the same thing.
"Review" right in the navigation, with all due questions at a glance.
Easier to read: larger text on labels and buttons, stronger contrast, and input fields that no longer zoom in on phones.
My progress tidied up: achievements and modules as clear lists; the activity honestly counts what it measures.
For teachers: create classes without a "URL slug", a clear switch for XP and levels, proper confirmation dialogs instead of browser pop-ups, and tabs that survive a reload.

No accidental VM start on your phone. The lesson page now also only starts your practice VM on a computer – on your phone you see how to continue there instead, so you don't lose a daily start.
Ordering questions never start already sorted. You really have to find the order yourself.
Gap texts shown correctly. On the course pages some tasks showed a technical placeholder – now there is a gap.
Navigation highlights exactly one page. In the settings, "My progress" was highlighted as well.

"Delete account" is now at the very bottom of the settings, separate from the data export.
More honest hints: shortly before time runs out we now tell you exactly what stays saved (solved tasks) and what doesn't (your changes on the VM).

A clear message if your practice VM doesn't start. The lesson now tells you why the start didn't work – for example a problem on our side or maintenance – and you can start again right away.
Failed starts don't cost you anything. If it was our fault, the attempt doesn't count towards your daily limit.

No more getting stuck while your practice VM starts. If the start fails, the page no longer hangs on the loading indicator – you can start the VM again right away. If maintenance interrupts a start, it now continues automatically.

Teacher and trainer area fully bilingual. Dashboard, sidebar, progress, module catalog and teaching material now show English throughout on the English site – previously some notices and the CSV export header were German there too.
Right terms for training companies. Where “classes” or “students” were still mentioned, companies now see “groups” or “apprentices”.
Clearer data report note. The preview explains that the file uses Coordinated Universal Time, without asking you to convert it yourself.

Singular instead of plural. With exactly one entry it now says “1 apprentice”, “1 task” etc.

Edit homework. Teachers can change the title, description and deadline of a homework afterwards – even after it has expired, to extend the deadline.

Due date at a glance. The “Your homework” box now shows the date the homework is due next to the time left.
Expired homework disappears. Once the deadline has passed, homework no longer shows up in the box. Teachers still see it in their list, marked “Deadline passed”.
Clear feedback for teachers. If creating, saving or deleting homework, the daily limit or an import doesn't work, the page now says so – with the reason when known. Deleting asks first.

“Joined today”. The display of how long you've been a member counted one day too many at certain times of day.

Complete data export. Your data export now also shows which class you are in (without data about your classmates) and which bell notifications you read or dismissed.

Fairer knowledge checks. The correct answer is no longer usually the longest one – you really have to know what is right. Typos and umlauts in the questions fixed as well.
Gaps stay gaps. For gap tasks and open tasks the page no longer gives the solution away in advance.
Complete data export. Your data export now also contains your module certificates.
A wrong link in the Lab leads to a page with the way back to the modules; the documentation loads without error messages.

Hints step by step. The next hint and the solution are only loaded once you opened the previous hint – after passing, all of them are open right away.
Continue without a second VM. When you move from a lesson to a challenge or another module, the Lab ends your running VM before starting a new one.
Fix the server – nginx: the hint and solution now name the command with sudo that really shows the error message.

Fix the server – backdoor in a cron job: the second task now also passes when you remove the timer completely, exactly as the solution describes.
Fix the server – nginx does not start: the service now shows the error message the first hint refers to.
After a debug challenge the next button honestly says that the next challenge starts a new VM; "What you can do now" appears once the whole module is done.
The solution can only be opened after the second hint.
Knowledge checks now shuffle answers without display glitches; Enter submits gap questions.
Clearer texts in the Docker module and in the weekly leaderboard.

v2.9.0 — October 8, 2026¶

New

Daily review. What you learned comes back as a short question at growing intervals – after a day, three days, a week. It usually takes two minutes, needs no VM and works on your phone. Your profile shows what you know well and what you should refresh.
A learning streak that fits you. By default a week counts when you learned on three days; if you prefer learning daily, switch it. Every learning activity counts – a quiz or a review too – and two pause days per week are included automatically.
For you in the bell. New badges, a finished module with a suggestion for the next one, and now and then a nudge when you are close to finishing – never at night.
Fix the server. Three new debug challenges: a server is broken and you find the fault yourself – no commands given, with hints in three steps.
A certificate for a whole learning path, with a public verification link – useful for applications.
A shared weekly goal for classes. Teachers set a goal, the class sees its joint progress – without individual rankings.
This week's leaderboard and your neighbourhood instead of only the top.
New badges for good learning: reviewed on time, solved without a hint, quiz pro, learning path completed.

On your phone you now see your modules, your progress, reviews and the knowledge checks. You still start a VM on a computer.
Under 16 the Lab shows no learning streak and sends no reminders by default – you can turn the streak on in the settings.
More hints in the Python, Git and SQL modules, more accurate checks in the Docker module and clearer texts in the SSH module.

v2.8.0 — October 8, 2026¶

New

Knowledge checks without a VM. Every module now has a short quiz with six questions – no VM start, no daily quota, and it works on your phone. Questions you got wrong come back at the end.
Learning paths. In the catalog you can switch between all modules and three learning paths: Linux basics, securing servers, and web & data – with your progress per path.
What you can do now. At the end of a lesson you see what you learned and can note in one sentence what you take away.
Tasks with a story. In SSH hardening, UFW, Linux console and Hello World every task starts with a small assignment from everyday admin work. The first tasks show the command, then it is given away step by step less – the last one you solve on your own.
A real SQL database. In the SQL module you now work with a real database and see the results of your queries.

Checks that really check. Python scripts are executed, the Git module reads your real repository, and SSH hardening checks the setting that is actually in effect – even if you set it in your own file under sshd_config.d.
More explanations when something fails. Linux console, UFW, Hello World, nginx TLS and the live website now also tell you what is missing and can show what the checker saw.
Check again. Tasks you already solved can be checked again on a new VM.
When starting, the Lab shows the task you continue with, and the remaining time no longer jumps.
A calmer VM welcome without the English system block.

If you lock out the checker account in the SSH module, you now get a clear explanation instead of a wrong "passed".
Live website: the first task stays checkable after the website is deployed.
The start button is disabled when you have no starts left today.

v2.7.0 — October 7, 2026¶

New

The Lab tells you what it found. For the most common stumbling blocks – for example in SSH hardening, UFW, Hello World and the live website – it now says what is wrong, such as "port 22 is still allowed" or "typo in PasswordAuthentication". More tasks will follow.
Success you can see. After every passed task the Lab shows your points, a new level or a new badge.
A real finish. At the end of a lesson you see what you achieved and get the next suitable lesson suggested right away.
Your first step. New learners get a short starter module recommended instead of clicking through the whole catalog.
Streak and level always in view – small in the header.

Waiting pays off: while your VM starts you can already read the first task, and a progress bar shows how far along it is.
Help getting into the terminal: if you have not typed anything yet you get a short hint, and after your first command the Lab reminds you to check.
The full 60 minutes: your session time only starts once the VM is ready.
Session expired? One click starts a new VM for the same lesson.
The leaderboard now only shows real learners.
The number of modules in your profile now matches the catalog.

v2.6.0 — October 7, 2026¶

New

Your progress in the catalog. Every module card now shows how many tasks you have completed, and "Continue where you left off" sits right at the top – with the lesson you worked on last.
Look at lessons without a running VM. You see the introduction, the tasks and your progress before you start a VM.
Stay signed in. If you come back after a few days, you land on the page you wanted instead of having to sign in again.
Join right from the course page. Every course page now lets you practise the module on a real VM with one click.

One task at a time. Passed tasks collapse, the next one moves up, and upcoming tasks are folded – you can still open them any time.
Clearer checks. A check you have not passed yet now says "Still open" instead of "Info", and the "Why" and "Hint" buttons are easier to tap on a phone.
Honest starts. The start button shows that it uses one of your daily starts, and the remaining time only shows once your VM is ready.
A calmer VM welcome without update and system notices.
One checkbox less when signing up, bigger tap targets, clearer texts and proper page titles in the Lab.
Signed in means signed in. Once you are logged in you no longer see "Sign in" buttons, and the logo takes you straight to your Lab.
Tidier profile: no technical identifiers, your certificates are visible, and the leaderboard explains how points are counted.

Fixed

The "Secret codes & encryption" module is playable again; solutions are no longer part of the tasks, and English-speaking learners get English words.
UFW module: the first two tasks can now be checked one by one in the right order; the text honestly says which rule is already prepared.
Hello World: the last task is now a real small hardening step instead of a check that passed automatically.
SSH hardening: the VM starts in the intended insecure state again, and if you accidentally lock out the checker account you get a clear explanation.
More accurate checks in the Python, Git, CSV, web security, Docker security and incident response modules – you pass when you have really solved the task.
Wrong or outdated hints in Linux console and log analysis corrected.
After an expired sign-in you land on the Lab login instead of the wrong sign-in page.

v2.5.6 — 4 October 2026¶

Clearer messages when starting a lab VM. If a start fails, the Lab now says exactly that – with a "Try again" button – instead of "The catalog could not be loaded". While a VM is starting, no further starts can be triggered, and you can see how many sessions you have left today before your first start.
When new sessions open is now shown as a time in your time zone instead of "midnight UTC".
Consistent wording. Lessons, the catalog and the levels Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced are named the same everywhere, and a VM's start time is stated consistently: usually about a minute.
Easier to read. Grey secondary text has more contrast and is much easier to read on projectors and on phones in sunlight.
More accessible. Screen readers no longer announce the remaining time every second; dialogs keep keyboard focus and return it when closed; every form field has a visible label.
Complete English interface. Two-factor sign-in, passkeys, and school and company administration including billing are now available in English.

v2.5.5 — 1 October 2026¶

Dates and times consistently in German time. Dates and times in the account settings, the support ticket portal, the lab history, passkeys and the school and training-company administration are now always shown in German time. Previously they could be off by one to two hours – and by a day shortly before midnight – depending on the time of day or your location.
Data export explains the time zone. The file under "My Data" now states that its timestamps are in UTC; the preview on the page shows German time.

Homework deadlines. A homework deadline is now saved in German time and shown with CET/CEST. Previously the saved deadline was one to two hours later than entered.

Clearer message when adding teachers. If a school admin account was not (yet) assigned to a school, teacher management wrongly reported that the school had not signed the data processing agreement. The message now names the actual reason. The same applies to training companies.

ZIP files as attachments. Attaching a ZIP file to a support request – for example several screenshots or log files at once – was rejected with "file type not allowed". ZIP attachments are accepted again, in the browser and in the app.

Sign in without checkboxes. Until now everyone had to confirm on every sign-in that they are at least 16 and accept the terms – even if they had long done so. That is gone: signing in with Google, GitHub, Apple or Eduplaces is now a single click. Age, terms and newsletter are asked only once, at registration. If a new account is created via the sign-in page after all, the Lab asks exactly once on first start.

v2.5.0 — 15 September 2026¶

Newsletter sign-up right at registration. When creating a Lab account you can now tick a box to get the Techlogia newsletter – in the sign-up form and when signing in with Google, GitHub or Apple. The box is never pre-ticked, you receive a confirmation email first, and you can unsubscribe anytime via the link in every issue. Not offered to learners under 16.

v2.4.2 — 14 September 2026¶

Fixed

Signing in with Google works again. Anyone trying to sign in with their Google account recently ended up back on the sign-in page with an error after the Google window — regardless of the account. The cause was a missing verification setting on our side; signing in with Google is possible again. GitHub, Apple and Eduplaces were not affected.

v2.4.1 — 24 August 2026¶

If your sign-in code doesn't arrive, we now tell you why. Until now both cases looked the same — whether our mail delivery was having trouble or there was a typo in your email address. People who had typed their password correctly still went looking for the problem there. Now we tell the two apart: if the address cannot be reached, we say so, and we confirm that your password was fine. If the problem is on our side, we ask you to try again in a moment.

Fixed

Brief hiccups at our provider no longer cost you a practice environment. If our server provider stopped responding for a moment, starting your environment failed straight away. Now we retry briefly and only then move to another location — a short outage is no longer something you notice.

v2.4.0 — 28 July 2026¶

New

Training companies can now set up the Lab themselves and try it free for 14 days. Under For training companies → Try free for 14 days, the training manager creates the account in a single form — no payment details, no sales call first. The trial covers five apprentice seats and the full feature set; it ends by itself, so there is no subscription to cancel.
A dedicated area for companies, with matching wording. Anyone managing a training company now works with groups, apprentices and trainers instead of classes, students and teachers — from the overview through group management to the progress view and confirmation dialogs. Nothing changes for schools.
Seats bookable individually. Companies pay per apprentice per month instead of a flat rate. The number of seats is chosen in the billing area, and the lower volume rate applies automatically from ten seats. Cancel monthly.
Reminder before the trial ends. A message goes to the training manager three days before the end and on the final day. Inside the Lab, a banner shows the remaining time. When a trial expires, progress, groups and accounts are fully preserved.

Remaining trial days counted consistently. The days left now come from the server instead of the browser. Depending on the time zone, the display could previously be off by a day — noticeable within a 14-day window.
Licence state in plain words. Instead of technical codes such as past_due, it now reads "payment due", "trial" or "active".
Code sign-in labelled neutrally. The field is now called access code rather than class code — the same sign-in page serves school classes and company groups.

v2.3.1 — 27 July 2026¶

Fixed

The terminal now uses the full window width. When starting a practice VM, the terminal often stayed narrower than the available space — leaving a dark strip on the right, and full-screen programs such as nano, htop or less ran in a cropped view. The cause was that the actual window size was never sent to the VM after connecting. The terminal now reports its size right on connect — including after a connection was automatically restored.

Course videos on the public course pages. Selected modules now come with a companion video: the public course page (techlogia.de/kurse) shows a "Watch video" button that plays the module video in a pop-up — a complete walkthrough of the module on a real practice VM, explained step by step. Fixed

The terminal now closes cleanly when your lab VM ends. Previously the terminal window could "freeze" when the VM was stopped in the background (e.g. when your session time ran out) — it would then stop responding for minutes. The connection is now detected and closed cleanly within a few seconds. Applies to the web terminal and the app.

The Techlogia Labs app is here! Now available for free on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. Continue running Linux VMs on the go, validate tasks right in the app, read lessons — with the same login as on the web, nothing to set up. The Android version is in the works.

New notice on smartphones: if you open the lab in a mobile browser, you now get a direct link to the app instead of the previous QR code pointing to the desktop. The desktop link remains available as an alternative.

Two-factor sign-in (2FA). You can now add an extra layer to your account with an authenticator app (e.g. Google/Microsoft Authenticator, Aegis, 1Password): after your password you enter a 6-digit code. Includes backup codes for emergencies. Set it up under Account security.
Passkeys. Sign in entirely without a password — via Touch ID, Face ID, Windows Hello or a security key. Phishing-resistant and convenient. Also set up under Account security, then use "Sign in with a passkey" on the login page.

For accounts using school login (EduPlaces) or a class code, sign-in security is handled by the school — there is nothing to set up here.

Big update: the Techlogia Lab becomes a full school learning platform. Alongside individual learning, schools can now organise their classes entirely through the Lab.

New

EduPlaces school login. Schools sign in with their existing EduPlaces school account — no separate password and no date-of-birth prompt. The first 14 days are free. Classes and students are imported automatically from EduPlaces. → School login guide
School admins can promote other teachers to school admin and share the administration across several people. The last remaining school admin is protected and cannot be removed by accident.
School admins can teach themselves — create their own classes, manage students and set homework, just like a teacher.
Extra sign-in security via email code. When you sign in from a new device, we send you a short code by email — protection without setting up a two-factor app.
Password check. Anonymously check whether a password appears in known data breaches. Your password never leaves your device in clear text.

Consistent mobile navigation — on phones the menu opens at the top via the menu icon, for learners, teachers and school admins alike.
Tidier account settings (account deletion in exactly one place).
